dust bus

hey everyone.

new here. this will be my 7th burn and i've had my '86 Syncro for about 1 year and 3 mos. (oh, she's getting old! ;)

I've taken her out to the playa twice already in the last year. So this will be the third...
but I'm nervous! Are we destroying our babies out there?

I noticed a lot of electrical problems post-playa. What kinds of issues have you guys had from the dust?
What do you to reduce desert damage before the event? And how do you take care of it post-event?

I've got a last minute decision to make if I'm taking her out again...

Looking forward to hearing your responses, if you're still around!
Otherwise, I'll have to come bug ya at camp. :D
Look forward to meeting you.

A little late in answering but there are a couple things you can do. #1 is use some di-electric grease www.autoaccessconnect.com/dielcogr.html and then coat it with a rubberised spray such as www.plastidip.com/home_solu...Plasti_Dip

I did that with my 72 and 67 bugs and it pretty much took care of any shorting across connexions. Be warned though; the plasti-dip makes pulling connexions a real chore, so keep that in mind.

We came in Monday in the dust storm de jour and my '86 Hobie Cat was coughing and puking all the way to camp. I fiddled with it a bit and we made it home but barely. I think my MAF or idle stabilization unit is out - Still spurting hacking and about 2/3s power.

a late reply but..notes for the future

last year was my first year... and I was warned about the playa dust. I was suprised how well the dust got into the engine compartment.

    - Until i realized that I had not covered the intakes on the upper rear sides of the bus. In a windy dust storm - they acted as funnels for the dust - directing the high winds directly into the engine compartment. DOH! And yes - now I am having engine electrical problems .

So I have a new partial wiring harness to install and in 2009 - i will definitely COVER UP THE REAR VENTS.
